The name Van Helsing has become more well-known since Hugh Jackman played the title character back in 2004 alongside Kate Beckinsale. The character was created by Bram Stoker in the “Dracula” novel written back in 1897. The character appears in many films and has been portrayed by the likes of Peter Cushing, Laurence Olivier and Anthony Hopkins. The Syfy channel, which is owned by NBC Universal, is bringing the character back but this time as a female.
Kelly Overton is no stranger to vampires and other creatures of the night having starred in the HBO series True Blood as werewolf Rikki Naylor along with appearances on such shows as Beauty and the Beast and Legends. Overton will play the lead role of Vanessa Helsing, a descendant of the Van Helsing family, who leads humanity in a world ruled by vampires. The show will also star Jonathan Scarfe, Christopher Heyerdahl, Paul Johansson, David Cubitt and Tim Guinee. “We’ve been extremely blessed to get such a wonderfully talented and diverse cast for Van Helsing”, says EP and showrunner Neil LaBute. “We have an amazing lead actress in Kelly Overton and we’ve built a brilliant supporting cast around her. I’m very excited to begin the journey of Van Helsing with this outstanding group of actors.”
The show will run 13 episodes and air this fall. Production is set to begin on February 22 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. This a unique spin on the Van Helsing character and sounds like something that can work. I am a fan of both 1992’s Dracula and 2004’s Van Helsing and I feel confident in Kelly Overton’s casting being she has experience in this genre.
