Universal Monsters ReAction Review.

mummy1A little over a year ago, Funko began their retro line of 3 3/4 inch scale action figures called ReAction.  Serving as an homage to the early days of Kenner, most especially as a nod to the early Star Wars toys, Funko produced countless figures based off of numerous properties.  One of our favorites was the Universal Monsters ReAction figures.  They brought the modernity of Funko to the Universal Monsters property while happily bringing to mind the vintage Remco action figures.

I decided to find a couple of my ReAction figures, pose them outside for some good fun with Joe of UMU, and give them a better late than never review.

There are two series of Universal Monsters ReAction figures.  Series 1 includes:

  • Frankenstein’s Monster
  • Bride of Frankenstein
  • The Wolf Man
  • The Invisible Man

Series 2 includes:

  • Dracula
  • Creature from the Black Lagoon
  • Phantom of the Opera
  • The Mummy

Described as “sturdy, plastic, posable figures”, each figure stands at 3 1/2 inches tall and features 5 points of articulation.  The ReAction figures by Funko and Super7 are very similar to the Remco action figures.  They feature a more screen accurate paint job and sculpt, but otherwise are very similar in almost every other aspect.

creature1What makes the Universal Monsters ReAction figures such fun collectibles is primarily the card.  Showcasing a film still pertaining towards the respective character, Creature has two iconic stills from the movie, while also being stamped with a “Universal Studios ‘Home of the Original Monsters'” logo that’s branded on all officially themed products.  This is the same with all other Universal Monsters ReAction figures in series 1 and 2.

However, there is one downside to the Funko ReAction figures.  The glue on the card seems to wear off over time and the bubble containing the figure could fall off.  While it’s a clean separation from the card, it will detract from the overall collectability.  While I don’t necessarily see these figures sharing the same dollar value as the Remco figures, for the serious collector, this could prove worrisome.

While there aren’t currently any plans to continue with the Universal Monsters property in ReAction of POP! Vinyl form, I would not be surprised to see Funko continue with their license when The Mummy releases June 9, 2017.

The Universal Monsters ReAction figures are still readily available in places like Toys R’ Us and other retailers, though they are becoming scarce.  A simple Google search should yield the results you’re looking for.  But if you happen to be in Queens, New York you may want to check out Royal Collectibles as they have a few left, along with many other great UMU and horror items.
