Welcome to Dark Universe

Van Helsing Vs. Dracula #2: The Blood Lust Begins

DraculaIn preparation for Syfy Channel’s upcoming Fall series Van Helsing starring True Blood‘s Kelly Overton, Universal Monsters Universe will be reviewing Zenescope Entertainment’s Dracula vs. Van Helsing.  Liesel is the daughter of famous vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing and is out to avenge her father’s death.  In the previous issue, Mina Murray has just become engaged to Jonathan Harker when she turns and bites Mrs. Harker on the neck.  It is up to Liesel, Jonathan and Hades to rescue her. They get a lock on where she is but discover she has become something more than a vampire.

DraculaPat Shand is one of my favorite comic book writers.  The work he does, taking such classic characters and re-writing them, while keeping them as exciting as they’ve always been, is a testament to his talent.  The way the story is written makes it feel like the reader is Liesel, thinking the way she does and feeling what she feels.   Jonathan Harker is a great character who is willing to do anything and everything to save the one he loves including taking on vampires loyal to Dracula himself.  Michele Bandini’s artwork and Walter Pereyra’s colors are vivid, eye-catching and invoke the fear these monsters hold on us.  The cover, a team effort by Richard Ortiz and Ivan Nunes, is beautifully done.

DraculaI am beginning to run out of words to describe the great things Zenescope brings to the table.  Every title they release is exciting and every character in their line-up has something to like about them, even the villains.  Dracula is a villain but between his being a classic character and the way he has been written, you can’t help but like him.  You may even root for him, too.  Hades is the ruler of the Underworld but looks like the cool front man in a rock band.  Keep up the great work Zenescope!
