Latest News on ‘The Mummy.’

Lizzie Georgiou

It’s always nice waking up to The Mummy news, especially when it’s courtesy of our favorite Mummy – Sofia Boutella.

Currently in week four of principal photography, filming is underway and underwraps on The Mummy.  Sofia Boutella yesterday morning posted the following image on her Twitter and Instagram account.

Featuring the make up team working on the Alex Kurtzman directed movie, we see some members including that of Lizzie Georgiou, whom UMU’s Joe profiled a few months ago.  But that’s not all, we see a Boris Karloff Mummy action figure surface for some behind the scenes fun.  Yet, it’s not just any Boris Karloff Mummy figure.  It’s one by Mezco Toyz, a Long Island City, NY based company that we’ve actually had the pleasure of visiting twice for What’cha Reading.

We even were treated to a few additional BTS pictures courtesy of Lizzie Georgiou.

While not much could really be made other than it is week four on The Mummy‘s U.K. shoot, the resurfacing of Boris Karloff’s “uncanny” portrayal of Imhotep in the 1932 Universal classic, on the set of the upcoming 2017 picture, is very indicative of the spirit and tone being kept on set.  A spirit and tone of sincere, but playful reverence towards the actor/make-up/work done on the classic film.  We’ve previously seen Sofia Boutella tweet and post a classic image of Boris Karloff as the Mummy, along with learning that Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan have religiously studied the classic library of films, including some Hammer productions as well.

The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman, from a script by Jon Spaihts.  It stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Marwan Kenzari, and Courtney B. Vance, and Sofia Boutella.  The film opens June 9, 2016.

As always, stay tuned to Universal Monsters Universe for more.  And if you’re interested in owning a Mezco Toyz’ Boris Karloff Mummy figure, Amazon still has a few available.
