Universal Monsters Universe takes a look at the Bif Bang Pow Penny Dreadful action figure of Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and decides whether or not this is something to add to the collection.
We’ve really been enjoying SHOWTIME’s Penny Dreadful as the hit show contends with some of literature’s most famous monsters. Dr. Frankenstein, The Creature, characters from Dracula all appear and the show fantastically has created a cohesive universe that any Universal Monsters fan would appreciate. The show also features Dorian Gray, the title character from Oscar Wilde’s gothic fiction story, “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” He’s wonderfully played by Reeve Carney, of the band Carney and Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark fame and while he doesn’t always appear in every episode, he’s certainly one of the main cast and one we enjoy every time he’s on screen. Dorian Gray is currently up to his usual reckless shenanigans in Penny Dreadful season 3 and with Lily (Bilie Piper), who’s essentially the Bride of Frankenstein.
It’s only fitting that collectible company Bif Bang Pow! has included Dorian Gray in their line of Penny Dreadful action figures. Their first wave of action figures include:
- Vanessa Ives
- Ethan Chandler
- Dorian Gray
- Dr. Victor Frankenstein
- Sir Malcolm Murray
- Werewolf Ethan Chandler
- The Creature
Each figure contains a sticker reading “Convention Exclusive Entertainment Earth” and “Bif Bang Pow! Exclusive Edition” with its edition number. The Dorian Gray figure we found is 0427/3700.
Upon first sight the Bif Bang Pow! Penny Dreadful action figures don’t look necessarily all that impressive, especially when seen alongside movie/tv/video game action figures produced by the like of Neca (Aliens, Predator, The Terminator). However, Bif Bang Pow’s Penny Dreadful action figures are actually really cool and feature very good sculpts as done by Gentle Giant Studios. (Prototyping is done by Gentle Giant) The head sculpt, right down to capturing Dorian Gray’s jewelry and rings are a nice touch to a great figure. If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll be very excited to find these figures and they also happen to be one of the best action figure lines based off of a television series, as BBP! has also done a line of Mego inspired figures to compliment the basic figure assortment.
The packaging for the Penny Dreadful action figures are uniform across the line. Each figure comes in a now common window box package and features the character’s profile shot on top, with The Creature (Rory Kinnear) on the bottom. The back of the package shows the rest of the line, but opts to show cast photos instead of the action figures and has a synopsis of the show:
Some of literature’s most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. PENNY DREADFUL is a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together these classic horror origin stories.
The first ever 6-inch figure of Dorian Gray is impressive as it features not only a strong likeness to Reeve Carney, but also has a collector friendly 18 points of articulation. Upon opening the package and taking Dorian Gray out, you immediately realize that posability is welcome as the figures smartly placed articulation will allow for a lot of fun play time and inventive posing/display.
Dorian Gray only comes with one accessory and its fitting that its of Dorian’s goblet of absinthe. That features quite unforgettably in the season one episode “Demimonde.”
As a fan of the series, Bif Bang Pow! and their line of Penny Dreadful action figures are a fantastic addition to the collection and as a Universal Monsters fan, they definitely belong next to the likes of the classic monsters as they are re-interpretations of those characters. I really like the work Bif Bang Pow! put into these collectibles and it’d be great to see the line expand to new characters like Brona/Lily, Hecate, and even season 3’s Dr. Sweet. But for now, wave 1 is enough to satisfy enthusiastic fans and are well worth tracking down. Each figure retails for $22.99
Bif Bang Pow’s action figures from Penny Dreadful are definitely worth picking up if you’re a fan or collector. They’re currently limited to select shops, but you could easily find them all at Entertainment Earth.
