Ahead of this week’s episode of ‘Penny Dreadful’, UMU takes a quick peak at episode 5 – ‘This World Is Our Hell.’
“This World Is Our Hell” – airs 5/29/2016
Directed by Paco Cabezas
Written by Andrew Hinderaker
Hecate and Ethan struggle to survive in the harsh desert wasteland.
As with every season of SHOWTIME’s Penny Dreadful, we usually have one episode reserved as a flashback for one of the characters – almost always Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives. This past season we got to learn more of Vanessa and The Creature (Rory Kinnear)’s past in the previous episode “A Blade of Glass.“
In this week’s episode, “This World Is Our Hell”, while it’s not a flashback episode, we will see this one spend more time with Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) who to viewers and Universal Monsters fans is revealed to be The Wolf Man, with the family name of Talbot. (wink wink to you Lon Chaney Jr. fans)
Interestingly, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner John Logan revealed a bit more of what we could expect from Ethan’s story arc and of how that will eventually explain how he became The Wolf Man while also revealing “his demonic father” who is played by veteran actor Brian Cox. Cox, stepping into the role we could only expect to be Talbot Sr. has previously been played by Claude Rains and Anthony Hopkins.
“It’s a real reckoning for Ethan this season. I always planned the character in the third season to go back and try to grapple with his demons, and his demons have to do with the past. They have to do with his father, the way he was raised, what happened to him in the past that made him this dark character, how he became a werewolf — all of those things are the issues that have been sort of looming over the character. I’ve always just loved Westerns, and I’ve always known, from the beginning of the series, that I wanted to take Ethan back home for a final reckoning with his demonic father, who Brian Cox plays later in the season, brilliantly.”
You could expect the Universal Monsters Universe review of “This World Is Our Hell” this week. But until then, we hope you enjoy a few clips from this week’s episode below
