Bif Bang Pow has a great line of collectibles based off of the hit SHOWTIME series ‘Penny Dreadful.’ Universal Monsters Universe takes another look at their lineup as we look at the Werewolf Ethan Chandler action figure.
Last month we got our hands on the Bif Bang Pow action figure of Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) from Penny Dreadful. It was one of seven figures in their first wave of action figures based off of the hit SHOWTIME series. This past weekend we picked up the Werewolf Ethan Chandler action figure and it’s yet another figure worth adding to the Penny Dreadful collection.
Bif Bang Pow’s first wave of Penny Dreadful action figures include:
- Vanessa Ives
- Ethan Chandler
- Dorian Gray
- Dr. Victor Frankenstein
- Sir Malcolm Murray
- Werewolf Ethan Chandler
- The Creature
Each figure contains a sticker reading “Convention Exclusive Entertainment Earth” and “Bif Bang Pow! Exclusive Edition” with its edition number. The Werewolf Ethan Chandler figure we found is 1967/2400, whereas Dorian Gray was 0427/3700.
The 6″ action figure of Werewolf Ethan Chandler is not all that different than Dorian Gray. They both feature the same amounts of articulation; Werewolf Ethan has 18 points of articulation for maximum posability and each joint moves well enough whereas certain action figures are a little more stiff.
Werewolf Ethan Chandler features a prototype sculpt by Gentle Giant Studios and is just as stylized and detailed as every other figure in the Bif Bang Pow Penny Dreadful line. The facial detail is what makes this particular action figure very impressive. It’s still identifiable as actor Josh Hartnett, but also very much the werewolf/wolf man he becomes in the show. The makeup that turns Hartnett into the werewolf that Ethan Chandler becomes is very similar to the make-up Jack Pierce came up with for the 1941 Universal classic, The Wolf Man. The sculpt on the Bif Bang Pow action figure retains the same look as the show and whether you watch the series or not, this is a pretty cool wolf man figure regardless. Have you looked at his teeth? He’ll rip your lungs out! The paint application is equally as good with hardly any spots that show bleeding.
One aspect to take note of is that the Werewolf Ethan Chandler action figure does not come with any accessories. But this is screen accurate so a fan shouldn’t really expect one for this particular figure, unless Bif Bang Pow decided to gore it up and give him a bloody limb accessory.
As a fan of the series, Bif Bang Pow and their line of Penny Dreadful action figures are a fantastic addition to the collection and as a Universal Monsters fan, they definitely belong next to the likes of the classic monsters as they are re-interpretations of those characters. I really like the work Bif Bang Pow put into these collectibles and it’d be great to see the line expand to new characters like Brona/Lily, Hecate, and even season 3’s Dr. Sweet, whom we now know is Dracula. But for now, wave 1 is enough to satisfy enthusiastic fans and are well worth tracking down. Each figure retails for $22.99
Bif Bang Pow’s action figures from Penny Dreadful are definitely worth picking up if you’re a fan or collector. They’re currently limited to select shops, but you could easily find them all at Entertainment Earth.
