Welcome to Dark Universe

Things To Do This Summer The Universal Monsters Way!

Universal Monsters

Summer’s here and it’s a great season to enjoy some of the “Universal Monsters”, classic and modern.  Not sure what to do in your time on vacation or on weekends?  UMU offers a few ideas.

It’s the summer and what better way to enjoy than with some of the Universal Monsters!  Whether you’re off from school, going on vacation, or maybe even still grueling away for the Dr. Frankenstein’s of the world, there’s always time for some classic monsters fun.  So perhaps you find yourself at work right now while reading or you’re enjoying a carefree summer vacation, either way, here’s a few ideas from us courtesy of your monster friends at Universal Monsters Universe.

Watch A Classic…

Universal Monsters

L to R: Helen Chandler & Bela Lugosi

You have 2 and a half months of summertime.  While most of that is hopefully spent enjoying time with your family and friends, maybe take a day or an hour or two to enjoy one of the classic Universal Monsters films.  Maybe we’re stating the obvious, but several of the classic films’ follow-up features are incredibly short.  The Mummy’s Hand is only 1 hour and 10 minutes, while The Mummy’s Tomb is 1 hour!  That’s easy to fit into your day and we highly recommend you do.

Or A Modern Classic!

Universal Monsters

L to R: CGI Imhotep/Arnold Vosloo, Rachel Weisz, & Brendan Fraser

There’s no secret that we enjoy several of the modern day horrors, and remakes of the classics.  The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser as Rick O’ Connellis one of my all time favorites.  I could easily watch it a few times a month, if not at least once a month.  Joe loves Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, while our Sunday Columnist Rob Texter has written about the films of John Carpenter and Guillermo Del Toro.  Case in point, there’s something for every one to enjoy watching.

“Creature From The Black Lagoon”

Universal Monsters

L to R: Ben Chapman & Julie Adams

Creature From The Black Lagoon is a perfect summer movie.  Maybe it’s playing at a Drive-In near you?  Are there even still Drive-Ins?  Whatever the status of Drive-Ins are, there’s plenty of ways to enjoy this 1954 classic.

  • Head to the beach, find a nice scenic spot, maybe put up an umbrella, and watch the Jack Arnolds directed classic starring the unforgettable Julie Adams.
  • Visit an aquarium near you with friends, family, or maybe even someone you like a lot.  Then afterwards, pop on Revenge of The Creature.  Universal Monsters fans reading this, you know what I’m talking about.  And for those that don’t, Revenge sees Gill-Man break out of an aquarium in Florida.
  • Or maybe check out the musical based on the Creature From The Black Lagoon.  We did and we even wrote about it too.

Attend A Monster/Horror Themed Convention.

There’s actually quite a few monster/horror/sci-fi themed conventions coming up.  For a more extensive list, you could take a look at Fear Shop‘s calendar of events.  But the 3 that stand out to us are:

  • Monster-Mania Con in Cherry Hill, NJ.  This takes place on August 12th, 13th, and 14th.
  • CT Horror Fest in Danbury.  It takes place on August 27, 2016 and the underwater Gill-Man, Ricou Browning, will be there!
  • And JerseyFest Fair, which is primarily a model and statue show.  But the Universal Monsters and classic horror are heavily featured and who doesn’t love the models. JerseyFest Fair is on August 26th, 27th, and the 28th.

Check Out UMU, of course!

Heading into our 5th month, we have some fun things planned for the next two months, especially regarding our next two contest/giveaways.  So be sure to continue checking UMU out for that.  But also if you really can’t wait for 2017’s The Mummy, set to launch Universal’s Monsters Universe, continue visiting the site as we have been and will continue to provide regular updates and everything related to the upcoming Sofia Boutella and Tom Cruise movie!

UMU’s Joe has also been covering Syfy’s upcoming series Van Helsing and with that show headed to San Diego Comic Con, make sure to follow all of our SDCC coverage regarding the upcoming show starring Kelly Overton.

Let’s not forget that we do love rewatching and talking about the classic such as Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Dracula’s Daughter so there’s always that too!

With two and a half months of summer and two solid months of July and August, how will you be spending your summer with the monsters?  Be sure to let us know in the comments below!
