Over the course of covering production of The Mummy, there have been plenty of photos and other secrets revealed. Well, the biggest secret has now been revealed! We have images, courtesy of Just Jared, of Sofia Boutella in full costume as the title character!
When Sofia Boutella was announced as the Mummy and Lizzie Georgiou was named as part of the makeup team, it was no secret there would be something special added to the classic Universal Monsters character. Sofia is no stranger to makeup and costumes, as seen in her work in Kingsman and Star Trek: Beyond. Lizzie and her team did a great job. It is something for the modern age but still honors the classic film. There is nothing eccentric or over-the-top about it which is a good thing as too many movie costumes these days seem to go more toward effect than practicality which makes them CGI-heavy. It will allow Sofia to move freely and make her look more realistic as if the Mummy really existed on the streets of London. We even get to see a weapon which looks like a dagger or sword.
While she is a mummy, she’s not from Egypt, hence the difference from Boris Karloff’s version. there are bandages but they are more torn and tattered, revealing skin impressions on her arm and stomach, forming a design which enhances the backstory of her being an ancient queen. Judging from these images and how she looks, I cannot wait to see Sofia’s costume and makeup in action on the big screen. The Mummy has the makings of a well-written, well-made film and could be an early contender for a 2017 summer blockbuster. As always, stay tuned to Universal Monsters Universe for breaking news on The Mummy and all things monsters!
“Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.”
The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman, from a script by Jon Spaihts. The film stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Marwan Kenzari, Courtney B. Vance, Russell Crowe and Sofia Boutella as the iconic creature now revealed to be an ancient queen. The film opens June 9, 2017.
