With only two weeks left of principal photography, UMU recaps week seventeen of filming on Alex Kurtzman’s “The Mummy” – starring Sofia Boutella and Tom Cruise.
On May 13th we reported that production on The Mummy would be headed to Namibia. Almost three months later and with just two weeks left of principal photography, The Mummy will soon be in the sarcophagus (or can). While filming looks to wrap on August 15th, things are heating up on the set as the main cast is now on location in Africa.
According to The Namibian Film Commission, over 600 people are involved with production on The Mummy, which includes crew, props and actors from overseas – mostly England, the US and South Africa. There are also about 150 Namibians involved with filming, as well.
Just today we received our first behind the scenes look at the main cast of The Mummy in a photo posted by Annabelle Wallis. This also marks our very first look at Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance, who up until now have not been pictured on set.

Courtesy of the always great Sofia Boutella, this week we also got another behind the scenes look at the upcoming first film in the Universal Monsters film series. As filming is currently taking place in Africa, we’ve seen several great photos capturing the beauty of the continent, specifically locations like the Namib dessert.

As you could see, filming is still very much ongoing as opposed to the reports of principal photography wrapping a few weeks ago. However, there have been several pictures that have released of an additional stunt scene filmed in London that feature Tom Cruise filming a bus crash sequence. We also learned that model Shanina Shaik had been added to the already impressive cast.
With filming looking to conclude on August 15th, we’d once again like to thank everyone that has followed our continuing coverage of The Mummy and we hope you enjoy these last few weeks of our ongoing look at each week of filming.
“Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.”
The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman, from a script by Jon Spaihts. The film stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Marwan Kenzari, Courtney B. Vance, Russell Crowe and Sofia Boutella as the iconic creature now revealed to be an ancient queen. The film opens June 9, 2017.
