Back in July, we brought you news that Victoria’s Secret supermodel Shanina Shaik was cast in 2017’s The Mummy. In a recent interview, she talks about her experience and being in her first movie.
The Mummy starring Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella has finished principal photography and is less than a year from its theatrical release. During the last few weeks of shooting, Shanina Shaik was cast in an unknown role. “It’s a small part, a cameo but I’m just so excited this is my first movie.” Shaik’s career launched in 2008 after an appearance on the show Make Me A Supermodel. Since then she had been offered numerous roles but never felt confident to take any of them up. Lucky for us, she decided to take this role. “But getting older and more confident I thought, ‘Why not try it?'” She also revealed why she passed up those early offers which included a Superman movie. “What made me fear acting was remembering lines, as that’s different from modelling, but with practice, you gain confidence and you become better at your craft.”
Shaik had just come off a modeling campaign for Seafolly in Sydney when she hopped a plane to Namibia where The Mummy was being filmed. “There’s a lot of sand!” There was also a lot to learn as she says in a social media post. The role comes at a busy time for Shanina who is preparing for her fifth Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in November. Stay tuned to Universal Monsters Universe for news regarding Shanina’s role and The Mummy.
“Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.”
The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman, from a script by Jon Spaihts and Dylan Kussman. The film stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Marwan Kenzari, Courtney B. Vance, Russell Crowe and Sofia Boutella as the iconic creature now revealed to be an ancient queen. The film opens June 9, 2017.
