Welcome to Dark Universe

From Dusk Till Dawn Brings Back A Familiar Face!

From Dusk Till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series creator and writer Robert Rodriguez has taken the movie and expanded it into its own universe.  It has gone into its third season and there has been no shortage of action, blood and surprises.  Last week’s premiere night featured two back-to-back episodes which featured new allies like Lord Venganza Verdugo (Ana De La Reguera) and her second-in-command Ximena (Emily Rios) and a host of new enemies led by Brasa (Maurice Compte) and Kate (Madison Davenport) who you could say has a new lease on life.  In this week’s episode, an old friend makes a huge return.

This week’s episode gets right to the point when a young girl walking down an alley is attacked.  This is no ordinary attacker, though.  This is El Caporal (Micah Fitzgerald).  He dresses like a cowboy and uses a scorpion tail to impale and incapacitate his victims.  Richie (Zane Holtz) and Seth (D.J. Cotrona) return to the Lords without Santanico (Eiza Gonzalez) to find that Lord Venganaza is not present either.  Ximena tells them of an ancient Xibalban slayer named Ilhicamina who Richie determines to be living on Earth as a human being.  According to him and Ximena, he can be the one who destroys Brasa and Kate/Amaru.  Time is starting to work against the Geckos and Ranger Freddie Gonzalez (Jesse Garcia) as new enemies arise faster and in greater numbers than before.

If anyone is qualified enough to play a Xibalban slayer on From Dusk Till Dawn, it is special effects artist and the original Sex Machine, Tom Savini.  Savini played the role in the 1996 movie from which the series was adapted.  He’s just as funny in this episode as he was in the movie.  Xibalban is living as a human being named Burt who owns a small store in the middle of the desert.  He had some great lines in the show and kept the original essence of his Sex Machine character from the film including keeping his being a culebra a secret.  For example, when Richie tries to use his hand eye on Burt, he pokes it saying, “Too slow!”  There was great interaction with Ximena indicating they had a past together.  He leads the charge to rescue Professor Tanner (Jake Busey), Ranger Gonzalez and the culebras being milked for their venom by El Caporal.  Sex Machine rescued Sex Machine!  Tom Savini is a legend.

From Dusk Till Dawn is already an excellent show and just when I thought they couldn’t make it any better than it is, they throw in Tom Savini as an ancient warrior living as a human.  From original characters like the Geckos and Santanico to new characters like Ranger Gonzalez and Brasa, there’s always something new, unexpected and exciting from Robert Rodriguez and his team.  You cannot go wrong with this show and is a must watch for Fall 2016.  I give this episode, and the show as a whole, FIVE STARS.

From Dusk Till Dawn airs Tuesdays at 9pm on El Rey Network.  Check your local listings.
