Welcome to Dark Universe

UMU Sponsors “Phantom of the Opera” at Nitehawk Cinema!

phantom of the opera

Universal Monsters Universe will sponsor a screening of the 1925 classic, “Phantom of the Opera,” at Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, NY this Valentine’s Day!

If you’re based in New York, and you and your boo-friend and ghoul-friend aren’t too sure what to do this Valentine’s Day, might we suggest heading to Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s Nitehawk Cinema for a one night only screening of the 1925 classic, Phantom of the Opera? Nitehawk Cinema is one of our favorite theaters and they maintain a solid commitment to film, classic and modern. Just last year, Nitehawk Cinema screened The Wolf ManDracula, and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Universal Monsters Universe had the great opportunity to co-sponsor both Dracula and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein with giveaways courtesy of Royal Collectibles and Diamond Select Toys. We have the good fortune to work with Nitehawk once again and we are excited to announce that we’ll be sponsoring their one-night only screening of Phantom of the Opera with Funko’s ReAction “Phantom” action figures.

Phantom of the Opera is an important film as it featured Lon Chaney, “the man of a thousand faces,” and is widely accepted as one of the first Universal Monsters films. The Rupert Julian directed silent film was released in 1925, a full six years before Tod Browning’s Dracula. There is current talk of an updated Phantom of the Opera to be set within the Universal “Monsters Universe” of films, beginning with this June’s The Mummy. While there has not been much said of this planned reboot, director/producer Alex Kurtzman in an interview did name drop Lin Manuel Miranda of “Hamilton” and Moana fame.

So, are you still thinking about the perfect Valentine’s Day date for you and your significant other? Or maybe just for you and your friends? Be sure to check out Phantom of the Opera at Nitehawk Cinema on Tuesday, February 14th at 7:30 pm ET. Tickets are currently on sale for $16, but will sell fast. Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, this silent horror classic features an aspiring young opera singer Christine Daaé (Mary Philbin) who discovers that she has a mysterious admirer intent on helping her become a lead performer. The enigmatic masked presence is Erik, also known as the Phantom (Lon Chaney), a horribly disfigured recluse who lives underneath the Paris Opera House. When the Phantom takes Christine prisoner and demands her devotion and affection, her suitor, Vicomte Raoul de Chagny (Norman Kerry), sets out to rescue her.

Reel Orchestrette (Bradford Reed & Geoff Gersh) is dedicated to the art of live musical accompaniment to silent films. Reed & Gersh have been collaborating together for almost 20 years, they formed Reel Orchestrette in 2012.

Be sure to get your tickets for Nitehawk’s screenings of Phantom of the Opera, playing on Tuesday, February 14th at 7:30 pm ET.

Universal Monsters Universe would like to thank Caryn Coleman and Nitehawk Cinema for collaborating and allowing us to sponsor their screening Phantom of the Opera.
