Cow-a-BOO-ga! The Universal Monsters Ninja Turtles toys are back!

Playmates Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were everywhere in the 80’s and 90’s.  They’re still on toy shelves to this day with a popular animated series and a film having opened just last summer.  Back in the early 90’s, during a resurgence of the Universal Monsters, fans saw many fun tie-ins, including one that saw Playmates and Universal partner on a series of action figures that many have either forgotten or may not even know existed – Universal Monsters Ninja Turtles!

Over 1993 to 1994, Playmates Toys released eight action figures across two waves of remodeled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures that were styled to represent the classic Universal Monsters.  During the early 90’s, Playmates Toys were a very dominant toy company as they also had the license for action figures and collectibles based off of CBS’ Star Trek property.  I think all of us that were around in the early 90’s remember the terrific Star Trek: The Next Generation action figures.  They also had a tie in with the Ninja Turtles as well.  In 1993, Playmates released Leonardo as The Wolfman, Raphael as The Mummy, Michaelangelo as Frankenstein’s Monster, and Donatello as Dracula.

While at this year’s Toy Fair, held in New York City’s Jacob Javits Center, Playmates Toys unveiled a new, upcoming line of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures in the tradition of their original Universal Monsters inspired line!

It’s exciting to see the classic Universal Monsters get the toy treatment, especially in such a nostalgic way. Funko’s ReAction line of figures from a few years ago was a remarkable nod towards the classic Remco figures. We’re happy to see Playmates Toys bring back the Universal Monsters Ninja Turtles action figures, especially by offering new molds based off of the current Nickelodeon series.

The first wave of Universal Monsters Ninja Turtles will consist of Raphael as Dracula, Donatello as Frankenstein’s Monster, Michaelangelo as The Wolfman, and Leonardo as The Mummy.

While we don’t have any more details regarding the line, we would not be surprised to see these figures release sometime near Halloween 2017.

  1. I love the turtles! I HIGHLY recommend checking out the 2003 TMNT cartoon series (which can be viewed on YouTube). One of my all time favorites!

    • That was a good series. I remember watching it and enjoying it very much.

      • Seasons 1 through 4 are unbelievably good! The seasons that came after were a downgrade, but I still highly enjoyed those as well. I don’t understand why the seasons haven’t been released on Blu-Ray.

When I first heard that this year’s upcoming Thor: Ragnarok would have gladiatorial battles, the TMNT series is what came to mind…the Battle Nexus! The Hulk vs. Thor fight is along the lines of Raf vs. Mikey!
