In last week’s episode of Van Helsing, Axel (Jonthan Scarfe), Doc (Rukiya Bernard) Scarlett (Missy Peregrym) and Julius (Aleks Paunovic) encounter a group of cops who offer them safe haven in their station. The cops ask the group to surrender their weapons but the group does not seem suspicious until Axel and Scarlet discover a vampire being held in a meat locker. The cops, led by Sheriff Walt, nail the vampire to a table and begin to torture it then throw it in a smoker to be cooked and eaten. When the four are caught trying to escape, they are to be hanged but the Sisterhood arrives to bring the cops to their doom. In this week’s episode, the gang is on the run as they escape the police station and try to escape the Sisterhood. Doc and Julius thought they had it down when they found a truck of food but they run into Scab (Rowland Pidlubny) and Dmitri (Paul Johansson) who meets Julius’s challenge. Axel and Scarlett find an armored truck full of money but are quickly surrounded by the Sisterhood.
Sometimes, flashback episodes don’t always work and become a jumbled mess. They disorient the viewer and downright confuse them. Luckily, Van Helsing did not do that. In fact, the flashbacks built Scarlett’s character and gave viewers an excellent insight into her past. It also introduced a Jonah Hex-ish cowboy vampire which made things interesting. Because of her father’s paranoia toward vampires, she is outcasted at school and deemed a freak, weird, etc. Unfortunately, her father’s paranoia is legitimate as the cowboy vampire appears to her in the family barn. It is hard enough being a teenager dealing with growing up and learning the harsh truths of life but it’s even worse when vampires are added in. The flashbacks did a great job with showing us why Scarlett is the way she is. She was on the outside looking in when it came to school and then had her innocence shattered seeing death and violence caused by vampires. It made her a hard person and a survivor.
There are only four episodes left of Van Helsing for season two which means things are only bound to heat up even more. In next week’s episode we finally get to see Vanessa (Kelly Overton) after two weeks of her missing in action. This show deserves a third season and has a strong fan base that wants a third season. This is one of the best shows on cable television today and is showing no signs of slowing down.
Van Helsing airs Thursdays at 9pm on Syfy. Check your local listings.
