In last week’s episode of Van Helsing, Doc (Rukiya Bernard), Julius (Aleks Paunovic), Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) and Scarlett (Missy Peregrym) are on the run once again as they escape the Sisters and Dmitry (Paul Johansson). The group splits up in the hopes of making it harder for the vampires to follow them. Axel and Scarlett find an armored truck, complete with lots of money, to hide in. Julius and Doc find a food truck with some chips left in it. When the Sisters try to smoke out Scarlett and Axel, the two jump out of the truck and fight them off. Doc and Julius encounter Dmitry and Scab (Rowland Pidlubny) who are much harder to fight. Unfortunately, Julius is taken from us by Dmitry’s hand after a brave fight. In this episode, we discover where Vanessa (Kelly Overton) has been taken. It is a lab where vampires are experimented on. Abigail (Colleen Witten) and Dr. Harrison (John Reardon) seem like they are working for a cure, but have other plans in mind for Vanessa and Scarlett.
Many would think a show like Van Helsing would rely on action, blood and guts to make it such a great show. All of that does help but tonight’s episode proved that it is not necessary on a weekly basis. Kelly Overton put in a fantastic performance as Vanessa dealt with a variety of emotions ranging from fear to anger to shock. She witnesses a vampire being injected with needles only to go berserk and kill one of the scientists. Abigail calls her in and she must bite the vampire to turn him in order to release the doctor. Abigail starts to spill facts about Vanessa’s mother, Scarlett and her childhood which has Vanessa convinced Abigail is someone important to her. You cannot help but get emotional and feel for Vanessa after all she has been through since losing Dylan. Dmitry himself, Paul Johansson, directed this episode and did a fantastic job with it.
There are only three episodes left to season two of Van Helsing which means the time to make sure the show is renewed for season three is now. Neil LaBute and the team of writers, producers, directors, etc. and Kelly Overton and the rest of the crew have done such a phenomenal job with this show from day one and deserve a third season. It has action, horror, humor and drama which all make for a well-rounded series. It was one of my favorite shows on television and I hope it lasts for many more seasons.
Van Helsing airs Thursdays at 9pm on Syfy. Check your local listings.
